In my 15 years as a wedding photographer, I’ve never had a couple request what Rylie & Haydn did for their engagement session. And now I’m thinking more couples might want this! Instead of a casual, engagement session, they decided to take non-traditional wedding portraits at their venue before the big day. Let me tell you, it was a dream.
We met at The Grand Hall at Nichols Heir during golden hour. There was no wedding day timeline, no rushing between events, and no stress about guests waiting. It was the three of us, their moms, and even her grandmother roaming the grounds. We chased the best light and captured portraits that looked like they belonged in a bridal magazine. Because we weren’t limited to the wedding day, we had complete flexibility. We could have rescheduled for weather, if needed (though the sun decided to show off for us). It was pure creative freedom.
And before you ask the obvious question—did Rylie wear her actual wedding dress and let Haydn see it early? Nope! She found a gorgeous white gown for under $100 that looked every bit the part of a wedding dress. Haydn, however, did wear his wedding suit (because why not?). Rylie styled her hair in an elegant updo in comparison to the down style she did on the wedding day, did completely different makeup, and carried a different bouquet. The only repeat element was her veil. Honestly, it was such an incredible veil that I can’t blame her one bit for wanting to wear it twice.
The result was double—maybe even triple—the number of bride and groom portraits without sacrificing a second of their wedding day. And the lighting was absolute perfection. I had so much fun exploring Nichols Heir with them, creating non-traditional wedding portraits that are every bit as meaningful as the ones we took on their actual wedding day. This is one non-traditional idea I think might be catching on!
