As I had inquiry calls with couples last year planning their 2025 weddings, I noticed a shift in the way couples wanted their day to unfold. Traditionally, wedding days were filled with long stretches of portrait time. But recently, a recurring theme has emerged. Couples are prioritizing being present with their guests. Instead of spending an hour away for portraits, they’re choosing to attend cocktail hour, mingle at every table, or step off the dance floor to chat with friends at the bar. While beautiful portraits are still a priority, the balance has shifted to focus more on connection, hugs, and real moments.
Sasha and Dillon’s Grand Hall wedding at Nichols Heir was the perfect example of this shift. From the very beginning, they made it clear that their people were the most important part of their day. We built their timeline around this desire, and even when things ran behind, they embraced it because it meant more time spent making memories. Instead of wandering the entire property for portraits, we took advantage of the gorgeous indoor hallway at The Grand Hall during a rainstorm and grabbed little candid moments throughout the evening. Their bride and groom gallery is still full of variety, but it tells the story of their day in a way that feels natural and true to them.
And then, of course, there was the weather that I MUST touch on because it just keeps happening every single weekend. Just as we were preparing for portraits, the skies opened up, and rain poured down. It was 2pm and the time that Sasha had to make the hard decision to continue with the plan of having their ceremony outside in the garden, or moving it down to the covered pavilion area just outside The Grand Hall. These decisions have to be made hours before go time because of the time it takes to set up chairs, furniture and bar tops. With a quiet confidence, she looked to the sky and said, “I just feel it. I see the sun behind the clouds. The Lord is going to stop the rain.” At 4:00, just before their ceremony is scheduled to begin, it was still sprinkling. Guests held umbrellas, and we were all checking the radar. But sure enough, at 4:28, umbrellas started closing. The rain had stopped completely. Not only did it hold off through the ceremony, but the misty fog that settled in the mountains created one of the most breathtaking backdrops.
We captured family portraits and wedding party photos outside before heading back to the Grand Hall to celebrate with guests during cocktail hour. It was a day filled with joy and community, and I can honestly say, we held to their desire to be with their people.
Sasha and Dillon’s wedding was proof that while photos are important, the heart of a wedding day is the time spent with the people you love. If you’re planning your own Grand Hall wedding at Nichols Heir, I’d love to help you create a timeline that prioritizes what is most important to you!
