No bride wants to think about the possibility of rain on her wedding day. When you picture your wedding, you imagine sunshine, glowing light, and everything unfolding exactly as planned. Thinking about umbrellas, backup spaces, or muddy shoes feels like inviting stress you didn’t ask for. And yet, when it comes to rainy wedding day plans, couples tend to approach this topic very differently. Some want an ironclad plan b locked in months in advance. Others push weather completely out of their minds and refuse to acknowledge it as an option. Most couples fall somewhere in between.
No matter where you are on that spectrum, I want to walk you through a few hypothetical scenarios that may help you relax a little more when it comes to unwanted or unexpected weather on your wedding day.
When it comes to adjusting for rain, one of the biggest game-changers is doing a first look. I know, another person trying to convince you to do a first look can feel frustrating. And to be clear, I am always supportive of what is right for my couples. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. I do, however, believe it’s important to weigh all the factors when deciding what’s best for you.
Opting for a first look allows for significantly more flexibility in your timeline. A typical pre-ceremony flow might include getting dressed, the first look and couple portraits, followed by wedding party photos. If rain is forecasted to hit right at your first look but move out shortly after, we can easily flip-flop the order. Taking wedding party photos in covered areas first and saving your couple portraits for when the rain clears. Rearranging pre-ceremony portraits based on weather is much smoother and less stressful when you’ve built in that flexibility.

This idea is especially helpful for quick summer pop-up showers. I can’t take credit for this one. I once saw Castleton Farms do it, and it was genius. A bride desperately wanted her vineyard ceremony outdoors, but a fast-moving rain shower was set to hit right at ceremony time and clear out about 20 minutes later.
Instead of forcing an indoor ceremony, the venue flipped cocktail hour and the ceremony. Guests were invited to a covered area to enjoy drinks and appetizers while the rain passed. Once the skies cleared, everyone moved to the vineyard for the ceremony. Afterward, family photos were taken, and the celebration flowed seamlessly into the reception. This option only works if your caterer can prep appetizers early, but when it’s possible, it’s an incredible way to preserve your vision without sacrificing guest comfort.

This is the one you probably don’t want to hear. You already dread the phrase, “It’s good luck if it rains,” and you’re allowed to hate it. But embracing rain is truly a mindset shift. Your story will unfold whether you embrace it or not, and at the end of the day, you will still be married to your best friend.
If rain becomes part of your story, it doesn’t make your day less special. Covered spaces, clear umbrellas, creative lighting, and thoughtful planning allow your wedding to still feel beautiful and intentional. And one day, your rain story may be exactly what helps another bride calm her nerves and enjoy her own rainy wedding day.

You can pray for clear skies, bury a bottle of bourbon, stick a knife in the ground, or buy a spell off Etsy. Ultimately, you cannot control the weather. What you can control is the team you hire. Experienced vendors have seen it all. They’ve tracked the radar, made tough calls, and adjusted plans countless times. When you trust your vendors, you gain peace.
A great photographer will make you look incredible whether you’re in rolling hills or under a porch awning, in natural window light or with carefully placed flash. Hiring seasoned professionals gives you the confidence to relax, knowing your day will be amazing rain or shine. And that feeling of peace on your rainy wedding day is priceless!
