There are some families who feel woven into the very beginning of your story as a photographer. The Grimes family is absolutely one of those for me. I’ve known Allison and Mike for years, and photographing their journey into parenthood with sweet baby Archie was one of those full-circle moments that stops you in your tracks—in the very best way. I had so much fun with them at Archie’s 3 month photos!
Allison and Mike’s wedding at Castleton was actually my very first wedding ever at that venue. At the time, I had no idea that single day would lead to photographing more than 30 Castleton weddings over the years. Looking back now, it feels incredibly special they are trusting me to document their growing family. Watching them step so naturally and beautifully into parenthood has been such an honor.
This session marked Archie’s 3 month milestone, which can be one of the most unpredictable ages to photograph. Babies at this stage are somewhere between the sleepy newborn phase and the expressive, sit-up-and-laugh 6 month stage. So much changes during this window, and it looks different for every baby. Some are all smiles and coos, some want to be held nonstop, some want to explore the world, and some are firmly in the “please put me down” phase. Many love my camera, some are deeply suspicious of it. Some tolerate tummy time, others absolutely do not.
Because of that, before I ever start taking 3 month photos, I always spend time asking parents about where their baby’s personality is at. Allison did a great job preparing me, and she was right on the money.
There were only two moments where Archie had a little cry, and honestly, they were both totally fair. The first involved the cutest handmade toboggan, gifted by a friend and very meaningful to the family. Unfortunately, Archie has very strong opinions about things on his head. We tried it just once right before an outfit change, and nope. Immediate protest. Thankfully, he recovered quickly with a few snuggles from mom, and those snuggles led to some of my absolute favorite images from the session. You’ll know them when you see them.
The second moment was tummy time. Again, Allison warned me. I saved it for the very end just in case it didn’t go well, and sure enough, it wasn’t his favorite. But once again, a quick recovery, a few cuddles, and we were right back to sweet baby smiles.
All that to say: Archie was SO good for his session. So many precious expressions, so many tender moments, and so much love between these three. 3 month photos are hard, truly one of the hardest ages in my opinion—but this one was such a joy. I couldn’t be happier with the images we captured, and I’m so grateful to continue telling the Grimes family story as it grows.
