Wedding Planning 101: First Dance Choreography

To Do or Not To Do Choreography For Your First Dance?

Every month in my Wedding Planning 101 series, I love breaking down topics that couples often stress over. Today’s topic? First Dance Choreography. I promise, this one doesn’t have to be scary.

When it comes to your first dance as newlyweds, there is a huge range of possibilities. On one end of the spectrum, you have couples who simply sway together and let the song carry them. On the other end, you have full-on choreographed routines with spins, dips, and lifts that feel like they belong on Dancing with the Stars. And honestly? Every single option in between is certainly valid.

I’ve photographed every level of dancing imaginable. There’s one major takeaway I want every couple to hear loud and clear: you do not need to be a dancer to wow a crowd. A simple twirl is always a crowd pleaser. Every time. Guests cheer, your photos look incredible, and you walk away thinking, “I’m so glad we did that.”

If dancing absolutely terrifies you, let me be very clear: a fully choreographed dance is not for everyone, and that’s okay. If the idea of memorizing steps and practicing for months feels intimidating or stressful, skip it. Your wedding day is not the time to force yourself into something that doesn’t feel like you. Even the most dance-shy couples can throw in a twirl or two though, and it makes such a difference.

On the flip side, if first dance choreography excites you, I want to wholeheartedly encourage you to go for it. Undoubtedly, choreographed first dances have become a growing trend, and for good reason. Many couples I’ve talked to turn their weekly dance lessons into intentional date nights throughout their engagement. Some even learn in group settings and form friendships that last long after the wedding day. From a guest experience standpoint, a choreographed first dance is unforgettable. People will talk about it for years.

As far as price points and learning options go, there’s flexibility. Group classes are typically the most budget-friendly, often ranging from a few hundred dollars total. Private lessons are more personalized (and pricier), but ideal if you want something custom. Those can range anywhere from $75–$150 per lesson. And for couples on a tight budget, YouTube tutorials can be a great resource. Especially for learning simple steps or transitions.

At the end of the day, remember this: a choreographed dance is never required, and confidence is contagious. Whether you go all in with lifts and spins or simply add a twirl to a slow sway, your first dance should feel authentic. And trust me, anyone can throw in a twirl.
