When Chris and Evan officially booked me as their wedding photographer, they were eager to jump right into engagement photos. Instead of waiting several months for my schedule to open up, we decided to do something a little different. They chose a sunrise session for their Norris Dam engagement. And honestly, it could not have worked out more perfectly.
We met just as the sun began rising over Norris Dam State Park, and the entire area was wrapped in the most incredible fog. If you’ve ever been to Norris Dam early in the morning, you may have noticed this phenomenon. For some reason, the dam almost always seems to have fog drifting through the valley. I’m sure there’s some scientific explanation involving water temperature, atmospheric pressure, or the way the ridges and mountains hold the air. Whatever the reason, it creates the most magical setting.
On this particular morning, the fog was a little thicker than usual, which made the whole landscape feel almost cinematic. When we walked out onto the top of the dam, the fog rolled through the background and softened everything around us. The light became this dreamy, diffused glow that photographers absolutely love. It was one of those rare moments where the conditions come together in the most unexpected and beautiful way.
The scenery paired perfectly with Chris and Evan’s outfits, too. The surrounding trees were still bare, leaving the landscape full of soft neutral tones. Chris wore a bright green sweater that popped beautifully against the muted background, and I could not get enough of the color contrast in these photos.
But what made this Norris Dam engagement session even more special was just how easy it was to spend time with Chris and Evan. From the moment we started walking between locations, conversation flowed so naturally. We talked about movies, conspiracy theories, Nashville, wedding planning, and everything in between. It quickly became clear that we had a lot in common, and that connection made the entire session feel effortless.
One of the most important parts of choosing a wedding photographer is finding someone you genuinely connect with. When you feel comfortable around your photographer, your photos naturally become more relaxed and authentic. Instead of feeling like there’s a stranger in the room with a giant camera on your wedding day, it feels like a friend is there celebrating alongside you.
I truly could not have asked for a better morning with these two, and I’m already counting down the days until their wedding this fall.
