Miranda & Nick’s engagement session on the Foothills Parkway was absolutely such a delight. They came into town for two things: their catering tasting and their engagement session. I love when couples turn wedding planning into a little getaway, and that’s exactly what they did. In June of 2027, they’ll be getting married at The Trillium Venue, and I can say for sure that we will be taking advantage of the epic views The Trillium offers on their wedding day!
Recently, I was talking with someone about how other mountain ranges around the world have these wildly dramatic, jaw-dropping views that seem to photograph effortlessly. And while the Smokies absolutely have stunning views, not all views are created equal. Especially in camera.
Lighting has EVERYTHING to do with it.
Most of those pull-offs that leave you speechless photograph terribly. Typically, you’re standing in deep shade caused by the mountain behind you, while the mountains in front of you are in full, bright sunlight. Your eye can balance that contrast. A camera cannot. At least not without intense off-camera flash that dramatically changes the look of the image. While I can do that, I honestly don’t love how flash looks outdoors during the daytime. It shifts the feel of the photo away from the soft, natural style I specialize in.
Other incredible viewpoints are privately owned by cabin companies or wedding venues. You can’t just pop in and use the view. You have to rent the cabin or pay a venue fee.
And then there’s Cades Cove, which is epic, iconic, and a logistical nightmare for sessions.
Once entering the loop, you’re committed. Wildlife viewers are stopping every few feet. Traffic crawls. If you’re trying to time golden hour perfectly, you might just be watching the sun set while stuck behind a line of cars. You have to start incredibly early, and if you arrive ahead of schedule, you’re waiting around in photo-ready outfits hoping the light hits just right. Add in the fact that you lose cell service about 30 minutes before entering the park, and suddenly you’re hoping everyone knows exactly where to meet and what car to look for.
It’s beautiful for a leisurely drive. It’s stressful for a photo session.
Some of the other breathtaking views require 1–2 hour hikes. And let’s be honest, no one wants to hike for hours in dressy clothes only to arrive sweaty right before their engagement photos.
Which brings me to where we actually went: the Foothills Parkway.
Miranda & Nick trusted me completely, and I guided them to one of my favorite overlooks on the Townsend end of the Foothills Parkway. The mountain views there are breathtaking with layered ridgelines that glow at sunset, but the lighting works with us, not against us. No hiking, loop traffic, or cell service panic.
And one of my favorite parts is the winding curve of the road behind them for those classic Smoky Mountain “just us and the open road” shots. There’s so much visibility on this stretch that we can see cars coming well in advance, giving us plenty of time to step aside safely without feeling rushed.
It was relaxed It was beautiful. It felt like them.
I loved getting to hang with Miranda & Nick for this sweet season of engagement, and if this session was any preview of what’s to come, their June 2027 wedding at The Trillium is going to be something truly special. I cannot wait.
