My First Irish Trillium Wedding
Some wedding days stay with me because of a spectacular view. Others stay with me because of the people. David and Pauline’s Irish Trillium wedding gave me both.
I don’t often photograph couples whose adult children have already celebrated weddings of their own. I don’t often shoot weddings on a Friday, either, or walk into a reception room filled with Irish accents. Pauline, who is from Ireland, and David, who is from the United States, brought their families and traditions together for a day that felt entirely their own.
If you’ve been in East Tennessee this September, you probably know the record heat we’re having. David and Pauline’s wedding day was especially hot, and David was wearing a black three-piece suit. They chose not to have a first look, but we had scheduled wedding party portraits before the ceremony. When it was time for photos with David and his groomsmen, I gave him a choice: head outside for the mountain backdrop or stay comfortable in the air conditioning.
He told me he would rather stay inside, but he knew Pauline would want the mountains in the background. So outside we went.
That small decision captured something I saw throughout the day. David loves Pauline deeply, and he wanted her wedding day to be everything she had imagined. Neither of them could have predicted the intense heat and bright sunshine on their late September date, but they adapted with such grace and kept their joy at the center of it all.
Their ceremony held one of the day’s loveliest surprises. As David and Pauline sat together listening to traditional Irish songs played by a live cellist, a faint rainbow appeared behind them. They had no idea it was there. You have to look closely in the photos to spot it, which makes the moment feel even sweeter.
Later, Pauline’s daughter and son gave heartfelt toasts, and David’s best friend had the whole room laughing. Irish traditions found their way into the celebration beautifully, surrounded by family and friends who were clearly delighted to be there.
This Irish Trillium Wedding was full of warmth in every sense of the word. More than anything, I’ll remember how happy David and Pauline were together and how deeply they cared for each other through every part of their day.
