It’s weird how once you’ve mastered a skill, it’s hard to teach others that skill. It’s hard to remember what you had to be taught vs. what is common knowledge. The things I do now in photography without even thinking about, I forget I would need to teach a new person that same skill. For example, when I first started, I booked sessions whenever was conducive to my schedule. At the time, I was a college student with an 8am class so I’d schedule people during my 9:30am-11:30am break. Once I graduated, I got a job where I would be done working around 5pm. So, I scheduled sessions at 5:30pm to shoot them on my way home. Photographing in those times is fine if you know how to you use sunlight, but at the time, I did not. When I would coincidentally book a session during golden hour, I would wonder why this one was so much better and so much easier than my others. Face palm when I finally figured out it was the sun low in the sky that made it so much better/easier. I had to learn that I needed to schedule my sessions within the last 1-2 hours of sunlight. It was a monumental change in my business because the quality of my work jumped drastically.
Later in my career when I had babies, I started offering sunrise sessions. Sometimes because that meant I would have one more evening home with them during the week and could go to games/practices/dinner with them, other times because my client had a baby I knew that sunrise would be better for their temperament. Not many people take me up on sunrise though. So, I made a blog post about baby temperaments and how they are usually their best selves in the morning. I educated my clients on other options that may work better for their family, and Alina and Zach took me up on it! We did their session at sunrise because little Beau has an early bedtime. Moving indoors was an option, too, but we shot their last session indoors so they really wanted a outdoor spot. So, they sacrificed a little sleep and switched Beau’s one year UT Gardens session to sunrise, and I think it worked out so well!!
