There are some families I’ve had the joy of photographing for years, and the Wertz family is one of them. From the days before they had any little ones, all the way to now as they prepare to welcome their second precious babe, it’s been such a gift to watch their story unfold.
One of the things I adore most about this family is how grounded they are. The Wertzes have this beautiful ability to find joy in the chaos. Something every parent knows well. And let me tell you, their little guy Beau was the sweetest little angel during this Lakeshore maternity session. From the moment we started, he was full of smiles, eager to participate, and cheesing big for the camera. It was much different than our last session where it took him quite a while to warm up, and I had to pull out every trick in my bag to get those grins.
As we wrapped up this session, Alina and I laughed about just how different the two experiences were. She shared something that stuck with me. She actually has one of the photos from our last session, where Beau was mid-meltdown, printed and hanging in her home. Because that’s real life. And she’s absolutely right. The beauty of family photography isn’t just in the perfect smiles or calm moments, but in capturing the whole spectrum: the giggles, the chaos, the messy and the magical.
Especially during a season like this. When the next chapter of life is beginning, it feels so important to embrace both sides. Life isn’t a highlight reel, and that’s exactly what makes it worth remembering. The Wertz family embodies that truth so well, and I’m honored I get to freeze these moments for them.
