Spring UT Gardens Engagement Session

It’s inevitable that at some point in my engagement sessions, I ask the couple to dance. The guy usually looks at me like are you crazy, Amanda? Then, I assure them it’s nothing tough. They’ll just sway and slow dance, and when I prompt him, he’ll give his fiancée a little twirl. I see them physically relax, and they realize I don’t mean I want them to bust a move 😂 At Julie and John’s engagement session, however the roles were reversed. Julie looked at John and said, “Oh gosh, what do I do?” She then looked at me and assured me John was a way better dancer than her. Even though Julie used to be an actual swing dancer back in her high school days. So, John stepped up, directed her, coached her, and led her. While I shot this whole moment through my camera, I realized what a beautiful thing it was for him to share something he loves and is good at with his soon-to-be wife while she soaked it all in with the utmost attention, absorbed in every word he was saying.

This is part of marriage. Sharing your passions with the person you love and them being genuinely interested because they love you regardless of how much they love the thing you’re passionate about.

Right now, I am learning this the hard way with March Madness in full swing. It’s hard for me to watch sports on TV without falling asleep. Especially in this phase of life with a newborn, toddler, and five year old. It’s hard for me to stay engaged in a conversation surrounding all the March Madness details because I have literally 900 other things racing through my mind at any given time. Here’s what I’m learning though. Dustin loves it. I don’t have to love it, too, but I do love Dustin. So, showing interest in something he loves brings him joy, and I love to bring him joy.

Thank you, Julie and John, for the sweet reminder you didn’t even realize you were reminding me 😁
