I grew up on the north side of Knoxville and rarely went west. If I did, it was on the interstate headed to Nashville. I had never seen Downtown Loudon (or even knew it existed) until the Bullard family told me they wanted to do their 2022 family photos there! I got there about 15 minutes early to drive around and pick out where exactly I wanted to take them. It is SUCH a cute area. I had an amazing time chatting with Jennifer and Rick about their lives and travels and three boys in between spots. I’ve always admired this family and how much they love one another. Of course, every family loves each other, but the Bullards are different. They genuinely like spending time together even as the kids approach their teen years. This is something I’ve spent so much time thinking through since I had Grayson in 2017. When I see families who do this well, I analyze what it might be that got them to that point. Well that, plus books and podcasts and parenting accounts on Instagram. I think one of the things that truly makes a family love AND like each other is when they all accept each other for how they are. Sure, there is a vision in a parent’s head of what they want for their child. Whether it’s a sports dream or a career path or what kind of friends they hang out with, but ultimately, it is not our decision who our kid becomes. What sport they choose to play or not play. What instrument they want to learn or not learn. What major they choose to study. What job they land on. Ultimately, it is always our kid’s choice, and we can either support them in it or try to change them to fit our vision.
Jennifer and Rick have embraced the essence of who their kids are as they have grown up and supported them in whatever dream and interest they have. You can tell by how their children respect them, love them, and enjoy being with them. You can tell because of the confidence their kiddos embody in who they are not only as children of Rick and Jen but also as children of God. I want this for my kids so badly it hurts. I want them to be uniquely them, and I want to love it, embrace it, and support it no matter if it fits into the prediction I have made for their life. The Bullards are just one of the families I am learning this from while all of mine are still so young and growing into their little personalities.
Thank you for always supporting my little business and showing me so much grace and love. I adore you guys and love your boys so stinking much!
