Castleton Vow Renewal

As a photographer, you overhear a lot of things on a wedding day. Not on purpose. You’re just always there photographing something around all the people, and you just hear them. For the most part, all the things I hear are hilarious and so true. Things like, “the first time my husband saw my fake lashes on the sink, he thought they were a centipede and tried to squish them with a wad of toilet paper.” And “c’mon now…all girls fart…just admit it…it was you.” 😂 But the girls at Haley and Jesse’s wedding said so many things that had me rollin’. These girls were so funny. But I overheard Marcie, Haley’s mom, say how absolutely ecstatic she and her husband were to be hosting this Castleton vow renewal for Haley and Jesse. Haley is her only baby girl, and she dreamed of these moments just as much as Haley dreamed of these moments. And they were finally happening. She also talked about how beautiful everything was and how full of joy she felt in that moment.

It’s so hard to see things from a parent’s perspective until you become a parent. I never in a million years realized how sweet a moment it is for the groom to kiss his mama on the cheek until I had my boy, and now, I look forward to his wedding day when I will get my own cheek kissing photo. It’s easy to get caught up in the planning of marrying your best friend, but one of my greatest pieces of advice is to stay true to yourselves as a couple and to surround yourselves with the people that matter most. Since their big ceremony was a Castleton vow renewal rather than their initial wedding, it was easier for Haley and Jesse to do this. They had developed relationships with all their people together rather than “his friends” and “her friends” and “his family” and “her family.” It was already “their friends” and “their family.” My encouragement to you brides out there planning right now is to try and view that person through the lens of a 5 year plan. Do you see yourself still being friends in 5 years? 10 years even? In 5 years are you going to look at your photos and say I wish I would have gotten a photo with you! If the answer is yes to either of those, include them, and if it’s a no, don’t be afraid to not include them. I promise, you’re not going to hurt their feelings as much as you think you are.

It was absolutely amazing to be the photographer for Haley and Jesse’s Castleton vow renewal. I’m so thankful they trusted me with this day. It was absolutely beautiful and so so perfect!
