There is a reason fall is one of the busiest seasons for family photographers in Knoxville, Tennessee! The temperatures finally start cooling down, the leaves turn the prettiest shades of orange, yellow, and red, and that gorgeous golden evening light makes everything look a little more beautiful. Not to mention, it’s the perfect excuse to update those family photos before Christmas cards roll around!
One of the questions I get asked most often in the fall is, “Where should we take our pictures?”
And I totally get it! Knoxville has SO many beautiful places to choose from. Whether you love the look of tall, golden grass, colorful fall foliage, historic architecture, or a more modern downtown setting, there is a location that will fit your family’s style.
So, I’ve put together a list of some of my favorite Fall family photo locations in Knoxville, TN, to help make that decision a little easier!

If you want variety, Knoxville Botanical Garden is one of my absolute favorite recommendations!
Located in East Knoxville, this beautiful property offers historic stone walls, winding pathways, open grassy spaces, and gorgeous trees that show off their colors during the fall.
One of the things I love most about Knoxville Botanical Garden is that you can get several completely different looks without traveling to multiple locations. The stone architecture gives your photos a timeless, romantic feel, while the gardens and trees create a softer, more natural backdrop.
It’s also a wonderful location for families with little ones because there is plenty of room to explore and move around between photos.
Best for: Families who want a mix of stone architecture, greenery, and beautiful fall foliage.
UT Gardens is another Knoxville favorite, and for good reason!
Located on the University of Tennessee’s agricultural campus, these gardens offer beautiful landscaping, winding walkways, seasonal plants, and plenty of little pockets that photograph beautifully.
While many people think of gardens as spring and summer locations, UT Gardens can be just as lovely in the fall! The changing leaves and seasonal plantings create a beautiful mix of colors and textures.
I especially love this location for families who want their photos to feel a little more polished while still having a natural outdoor setting.
Another bonus? There are so many different backgrounds within a relatively small area, which is always helpful when photographing younger children!
Best for: Families who love manicured gardens, colorful backgrounds, and a classic portrait style.

Okay, if you LOVE those dreamy family photos with tall, wispy grass blowing in the breeze, Melton Hill Park needs to be at the TOP of your list! However, you have to make sure you catch it before it gets cut!
This location is one of my favorites for that soft, golden, romantic look that is so popular during fall.
The tall, sweeping grass catches the sunlight beautifully, especially during the hour leading up to sunset. Add in the beautiful river views and wide-open spaces, and you have a recipe for some seriously gorgeous family portraits!
What I love most about this location is how naturally it lends itself to candid moments. Kids can run through the grass, parents can scoop them up, and everyone can simply enjoy being together.
Those big, genuine smiles that happen when nobody is worried about standing perfectly still? Those are always some of my favorite images!
Keep in mind that the height and appearance of the grass can change depending on when the fields have been maintained.
Best for: Families who love warm, golden tones, tall grass, and natural, playful photographs.

If you’re willing to drive just a little outside Knoxville, Norris Dam is an incredible location for fall family photos!
Between the wooded trails, beautiful water views, and colorful autumn trees, there are SO many gorgeous backdrops to choose from.
One particularly beautiful area is the Songbird Trail near Norris Dam. This peaceful riverside trail offers beautiful tree coverage and some of the prettiest fall scenery in the area. I also love the location right at the base of the dam with the colorful trees on the ridge behind my clients!
I love locations like this because they give families the opportunity to interact naturally. Walking together, holding hands, and exploring the trails often create some of the sweetest images.
If your family loves the outdoors and wants photos that really showcase the beauty of East Tennessee in the fall, Norris Dam is an excellent choice.
Best for: Families who want vibrant fall colors, wooded trails, and beautiful waterfront scenery.

Not everyone wants their fall family photos taken in a field or surrounded by trees, and I LOVE that!
If you’re looking for something a little more urban, the lawn in front of the Knox County Courthouse in downtown Knoxville is such a beautiful option.
The courthouse provides a classic architectural backdrop, while the lawn adds just enough greenery to keep the photos feeling warm and inviting.
One of my favorite things about photographing families downtown is the variety we can create in a single session.
We can start with more traditional family portraits on the courthouse lawn and then incorporate nearby sidewalks, historic buildings, and downtown streets for a completely different look.
This is an especially fun option for families who want their photos to feel a little more sophisticated or editorial without losing that relaxed, family-focused atmosphere.
Best for: Families who love classic architecture, urban scenery, and a slightly more dressed-up look.

Lakeshore Park is easily one of Knoxville’s most versatile locations for family photography!
Located in West Knoxville, this park has everything from wide-open grassy fields to beautiful tree-lined walkways and gorgeous views of the Tennessee River.
During the fall, the trees throughout the park begin changing colors, creating some beautiful backdrops for family portraits. Most of the time you’ll catch me at the HGTV overlook… it’s my FAV!
I particularly love the combination of open spaces and mature trees. It allows us to capture those traditional everyone-looking-at-the-camera photos while also giving the kids plenty of room to run around and have fun.
And if you’ve followed my photography for any amount of time, you know how much I LOVE incorporating movement and candid moments into family sessions!
Best for: Families with young children, larger families, and anyone who wants a combination of fall foliage and open grassy spaces.

Seven Islands State Birding Park is a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to family photography locations around Knoxville.
Located in Kodak, just east of Knoxville, this beautiful park offers rolling fields, walking trails, river views, and an abundance of natural scenery.
During the fall, the open meadows take on beautiful golden tones while the surrounding trees begin changing colors.
It’s a wonderful location for families who love a more natural, outdoorsy feel.
The wide-open spaces are especially great for families with energetic kiddos who need a little freedom to move around during their session.
Pro tip – we had our own family photos taken there this year and I brought scooters for my kids to ride around the trails as we moved from place to place!
And let’s be serious, sometimes the best family photos happen when the kids are simply being kids!
Best for: Families who love natural landscapes, golden fields, and relaxed outdoor portraits.

Sequoyah Hills is another beautiful Knoxville location that really shines during the fall months.
The mature trees lining Cherokee Boulevard create gorgeous fall colors, and the nearby Tennessee River adds another beautiful element to the scenery.
What makes this location especially appealing is its timeless, classic feel.
The tree-lined pathways and open grassy spaces are perfect for family portraits, especially when the leaves begin turning those rich autumn shades.
It’s also a wonderful choice if you’re hoping for photos that feel natural and relaxed without having to venture too far outside the city.
Best for: Families who love colorful fall trees, classic scenery, and a peaceful park setting.

For families who love a little adventure, Ijams Nature Center is another fantastic option!
Located in South Knoxville, Ijams offers wooded trails, beautiful natural textures, and plenty of opportunities to incorporate fall foliage into your portraits.
Nearby Mead’s Quarry adds something a little different with its rocky landscape and beautiful water views.
I especially love how the combination of colorful trees, water, and stone creates a backdrop that feels completely different from Knoxville’s traditional garden locations.
Best for: Adventurous families who love wooded scenery, natural textures, and unique backdrops.
This is another question I get ALL the time!
In Knoxville, we typically start seeing those beautiful fall colors develop throughout October. Some of the prettiest foliage appears from late October through early November.
Of course, Mother Nature likes to keep us guessing! Temperatures, rainfall, and seasonal weather patterns can all influence when the leaves reach their peak colors.
If you’re dreaming of those golden, grassy fields, you may not need to wait for peak foliage at all. Locations like Melton Hill Park can offer beautiful warm tones even before the leaves fully change.
And if you’re hoping for those vibrant orange and red trees, scheduling toward the later part of October or early November is often a great option.
One more thing to remember: Fall is one of the busiest times of year for family photographers, so I always recommend booking your session well in advance!
At the end of the day, the best location for your family isn’t necessarily the one with the most colorful trees or the prettiest sunset.
It’s the one that fits YOUR family.
If you have little ones who love to run, let’s choose somewhere with plenty of open space. If you love dressing up and want a more polished look, let’s find a beautiful garden or downtown setting. And if your family loves hiking and exploring together, let’s head somewhere that reflects that!
I want your family photos to feel like you. Not just everyone standing in a pretty place smiling at the camera, but images that reflect the personalities, relationships, and season of life you’re in right now.
Because years from now, when you’re looking back at these photographs, I don’t think you’ll be focused on whether the leaves were perfectly orange or the grass was exactly the right shade of gold.
You’ll be looking at how little your kids were, remembering their personalities, and wondering how in the WORLD they grew up so quickly.
And THAT is why we take the photos.
So, whether you’re drawn to the beautiful stone walls at Knoxville Botanical Gardens, the golden grass at Melton Hill, or the charming streets of downtown Knoxville, my team would absolutely love to help you choose the perfect location for your next family session!
