This proposal was one of the most intricate proposals I’ve ever photographed. There were SO many people involved, and as I’m sure you’ve experienced yourself, the more people there are, the less control you have over the whole situation, but everything literally went off without a single hitch. I think we ended up deciding there were something like 75-100 people that came to support these two lovebirds.
It started out with Lane, the Proposer, deciding he wanted to propose to Graysen in Market Square in Knoxville, TN. Market Square is one of Graysen’s favorite spots in Knoxville. They had discussed getting engaged before but had decided to wait until spring, so doing it in January allowed Lane to take Graysen completely by surprise. The whole evening started with getting a late lunch in market square with just the immediate family. Afterwards, Colton (Graysen’s brother) walked Graysen around downtown stalling so that Graysen’s mom could get all the rest of the friends and family in place. Right across the street from the Riviera Theater on Gay Street is where the path started. Once everyone was in place, Shawna (Graysen’s mom) text Colton to let him know he was good to leave Mast General Store and head toward the theater. There were two photographers and three videographers set up waiting to get the first peek of Colton and Graysen coming down the sidewalk. I had my huge zoom lens setup and was perched behind some post office boxes. It took them a good 5 minutes to get out of the store and into sight, so each person walking past us in that 5 minutes thought we were some real creeps taking pictures of strangers lol. But eventually they came into sight and we all took our place. From the first check point, a brick pillar on the corner of the patch of grass right there off Gay Street, all the way to the end of Crutch Park right before you cross over into Market Square, there were little clusters of Graysen’s and Lane’s closest friends and family ready to greet her with a smile, hug, tears, and their favorite picture of Graysen and Lane blown up to an 8×10. From the very first group, Graysen had already started to shed the tears of joy. She knew exactly what was happening as soon as those first set of friends turned around. After she passed each cluster, they would start following her so by the very end, where his and her parents were waiting, there was a HUGE mass of people behind them there to witness the actual proposal. Once Graysen got to the end of Crutch Park, she crossed the street arm in arm with her mom and dad. They had one more sweet moment before Graysen started up the stone path to Lane, who was standing in the middle of the trees in between Cafe 4 and Tupelo Honey. She was wiping away tears as she approached him and he was tearing up as he prepared to ask her to marry him. It was the SWEETEST moment EVER! He said a few words and then got down on one knee!!
After she said yes, and he has put the ring on her finger, they have a brief moment to themselves and the whole crowd rushes up to congratulate them. There are friends and family from all over hugging them both, wiping away their happy tears, awing over her ring, and just celebrating with them. Eventually they all got into a HUGE circle, right in the middle of market square, held hands, and prayed for Graysen and Lane. There were SO many bystanders that had stopped to watch and when they all circled up to pray, I hope that there was at least one person that was shown the light of Christ. How cool is that?!?! His proposal could have sparked an interest in some stranger to pursue a relationship with Jesus!! How grateful I am that we live in a country that gives us the freedom to have group prayer in public. Anyways, I’m getting totally sidetracked. Afterwards, I got to take Lane and Graysen for some sweet sweet engagement photos right around Market Square for about ten minutes before they joined the rest of the people at Graysen’s house for drinks, food and celebrating!
To the fella’s reading this, take note… this was a good one. Lane blew it out of the water! I’m so thankful that I got to be a part of this extravagant event!!!!
