A Johnson City Engagement Session at a Golf Course & A Lake House

I have not spent much time in Johnson City throughout my life, but in the last few months, I’ve been there twice. I just adore this little town. Back in July, I shot a wedding in Johnson City where I drove through the downtown area to get there. I called my husband and told him how adorable and poppin’ the downtown area was. For Nikki and Mark’s Johnson City engagement session, I saw more of the countryside. The insanely gorgeous golf course had me DROOLING over the houses. Then, we explored a lakefront neighborhood with the most gorgeous properties. When planning their Johnson City engagement, I told Nikki I couldn’t be of much help with choosing a location. So, I recommended she go through places and things they love doing together. If they love the downtown life, let’s do downtown. If they love the lake, let’s go somewhere we can see the water. Nikki did SUCH a good job at taking that advice and finding two AMAZING locations. The golf course was perfect and had beautiful landscaping for some photos at the clubhouse before we drove a golf cart out to some various spots along the course. The lighting was phenomenal, and their outfits paired so well with the green backdrop. Then, we drove to a friend’s lakehouse where we got some AMAZING lake views. I love that in this spot on the lake, it is kind of narrow, and you can see easily across to the other side. That does a couple things for portraits: 1) The reflection in the water behind the couple is of the wall of trees on the opposite side of the lake. That makes the colors rich and vibrant vs. reflecting the sky which would just be a really bright, overexposed reflection behind them, and 2) They had a backdrop behind their heads that was so gorgeous. When you look across the water to other houses, you have someone else’s house in the background. When you are at a point in the lake where it’s really vast with tons of water behind your head, the horizon can cut right through the back of your head, and it’s very distracting. Plus, there’s no contrast for you to really pop off of the background. When it’s like this, however, it’s perfect. I’d even say the most ideal situation for a lake backdrop.

I don’t know much about the area, but what I do know of it, I could totally get used to shooting Johnson City engagement sessions more often!
