A Lincoln Memorial Sunrise Session on Their Fifth Anniversary

Five years ago, I had the joy of photographing Patricia and Donny’s wedding. Since then, their lives have changed so much. They moved to Washington, D.C., welcomed a baby, and began an entirely new chapter together. Getting to document their family during a Lincoln Memorial sunrise session felt incredibly special. The story of how it happened made the experience even more meaningful though.

Earlier this year, Patricia reached out for help finding a local family photographer. She wanted someone who could provide the attentive service, experience, and quality she valued while remaining within their budget. She sent me a few photographers she had found, but I understood why she was struggling to make a decision. After sharing my thoughts on the strongest option, I casually mentioned that I would be visiting Washington, D.C., in October during fall break, and that I would be happy to photograph their family while I was there.

Patricia responded immediately with excitement. She and Donny would be returning from Korea only a week before my visit, so they knew they might still be dealing with jet lag. Even so, they wanted to make the session happen.

We originally planned a sunset session on Wednesday. However, after spending some time exploring D.C., I quickly realized that the Lincoln Memorial was both the perfect location and one of the city’s most popular landmarks. A sunrise session would allow us to avoid the largest crowds while enjoying the soft, beautiful morning light behind the Washington Monument. Shout out to Andrea with AC Goodman Photography for mentioning this to me because I would not have even thought about that without her!

Thankfully, Patricia and Donny agreed to switch our plans to Friday morning. What none of us realized at the time was that Friday was their exact five-year wedding anniversary!

Patricia told me when I arrived, and it honestly blew my mind. What were the chances a session we originally planned for another day would be moved to their fifth anniversary? It felt like such a wonderful serendipitous moment.

Their Lincoln Memorial sunrise session gave us a peaceful morning, gorgeous light, and an iconic Washington, D.C., backdrop. More importantly, it allowed me to document Patricia, Donny, and Patricia’s mom not only as a married couple, but now as parents. I am so thankful they trusted me to capture another season of their lives.

I fell in love with Washington, D.C., during this trip, and the Lincoln Memorial may be one of the most beautiful locations I have ever photographed. If my family returns, I may have to find a photographer to create images for us there, too. It was truly that magical.
