Wedding Planning 101: 10 Cute Ways to Ask Your Bridesmaids

From a simple FaceTime to a full bridesmaid proposal box, there’s no wrong way to ask your favorite girls to stand beside you.

You’re engaged, you’ve started dreaming about your wedding day, and now it’s time for one of the most fun parts: asking your bridesmaids!

Bridesmaid proposals have definitely become a thing over the years. Scroll through Pinterest or Instagram and you’ll find elaborate boxes filled with personalized pajamas, champagne, jewelry, candles, tumblers, and just about anything else you can monogram. And while those gifts can be incredibly fun, they are absolutely not a requirement.

The best way to ask your bridesmaids is the one that feels like you and fits comfortably within your wedding budget.

Whether that means sitting across from your best friend at brunch, mailing a thoughtful package across the country, or FaceTiming your sister because you simply cannot wait another second to ask her, the important part is the person you’re asking not how elaborate the proposal is.

So, when should you ask? How should you ask? And how much should you spend? Let’s get into it!

When Should You Ask Your Bridesmaids?

It can be tempting to start asking your bridesmaids approximately 14 seconds after the ring is on your finger. But you don’t have to rush!

Ideally, wait until you have a general idea of your wedding date, venue, and what you’re envisioning for the wedding. You don’t necessarily need every detail figured out, but your bridesmaids should have enough information to understand what they’re saying yes to.

For most weddings, asking around 8–12 months before the wedding gives everyone plenty of time to plan. If you’re having a destination wedding, an expensive bachelorette trip, or asking friends who will need to travel, giving them even more notice can be helpful.

One other reason not to ask immediately is that your wedding party is one decision that is pretty difficult to undo. Give yourself a little time to settle into being engaged and make sure the people you ask are truly the people you want standing beside you on your wedding day.

In Person, By Mail, or FaceTime?

There really isn’t a “right” way to do this.

Asking in person is wonderful when your bridesmaids live nearby. Invite them to coffee, brunch, dinner, or your house and make a little moment out of it. You also get the bonus of seeing their reaction!

Mailing a bridesmaid proposal is perfect for long-distance friendships. Who doesn’t love getting an unexpected package in the mail? You can make it as simple or elaborate as you’d like.

And then there’s FaceTime. If your best friend lives six hours away and you’re dying to ask her, call her! You can always send a little gift afterward. A FaceTime proposal is still personal because you get to actually tell her how much she means to you and see her reaction in real time.

Now for the fun part.

10 Cute Ways to Ask Your Bridesmaids

1. The Heartfelt Card — $

Sometimes the simplest option is also one of the most meaningful.

Choose a beautiful card and write an actual letter inside. Tell her why you love her, share a favorite memory, and explain why having her beside you on your wedding day would mean so much.

Finish it with: “Will you be my bridesmaid?”

This is inexpensive, incredibly personal, and something she can keep long after the wedding.

2. Coffee or Dessert Date — $

Ask her to meet you at your favorite coffee shop, bakery, or ice cream spot and ask her in person. You can bring a card or simply tell her face-to-face.

If you’re asking several bridesmaids who know one another, you could even invite everyone over for dessert and ask them together.

3. FaceTime + A Surprise Delivery — $$

For your long-distance girls, schedule a FaceTime call and ask them personally. Then tell them to keep an eye on their mailbox.

Send a small package afterward with something fun like a candle, favorite candy, mini bottle of sparkling cider, framed photo of the two of you, or handwritten note.

4. Personalized Ornament — $$

If you’re asking around the holidays, this one is SO cute.

Have an ornament made with her name, your wedding date, or “Bridesmaid,” and give it to her as a keepsake. Every Christmas afterward, she’ll have a little reminder of that season of your friendship.

5. Mini Bridesmaid Proposal Box — $$

You absolutely do not need to fill a giant box with $150 worth of goodies to create an adorable bridesmaid proposal.

Choose two or three thoughtful items—maybe a scrunchie, lip balm, favorite candy, mini candle, and handwritten card—and package everything beautifully.

Cute packaging can make even a very inexpensive gift feel intentional.

6. Personalized Jewelry — $$$

Give her something she can actually wear beyond your wedding day.

A simple necklace, bracelet, earrings, or birthstone piece can make a beautiful bridesmaid proposal gift. You could choose something personalized to each bridesmaid rather than giving everyone the exact same item.

Bonus: If the jewelry works with your bridesmaid dresses, you could also let them know they’re welcome to wear it on the wedding day.

7. Brunch + Bridesmaid Proposal — $$$

Invite your girls to brunch!

You could reserve a table at a favorite restaurant or host brunch at home with pastries, fruit, mimosas, coffee, and little place cards asking each girl to be your bridesmaid.

This is especially fun if most of your bridal party already knows one another because it gives everyone a chance to celebrate together right from the beginning.

8. Personalized Bridesmaid Bag — $$$$

Instead of a traditional box, choose something she can reuse.

Start with a personalized tote, makeup bag, travel bag, or small weekender and fill it with a few things specifically chosen for her. Think favorite snacks, skincare, sunglasses, a travel jewelry case, pajamas, or something related to an inside joke between you.

This can feel much more personal than buying identical “bridesmaid” products for everyone.

9. Bridesmaid Experience Day — $$$$

Instead of giving them more stuff, give them an experience.

Plan a girls’ afternoon with manicures, a winery visit, afternoon tea, a picnic, pottery painting, or another activity your group would genuinely enjoy. Ask them at the beginning and spend the rest of the day celebrating!

You’re creating your first wedding-related memory together before the planning even begins.

10. The Ultimate Bridesmaid Proposal Box — $$$$$

If bridesmaid proposals are something you’ve been dreaming about and you have room in your budget, go all out!

Think beautiful keepsake box, personalized pajamas, jewelry, tumbler, candle, skincare, champagne, travel accessories, handwritten letters, and anything else that feels specific to your friendships.

There’s absolutely no expectation that you spend this much, but if gift giving is your love language and something you’re excited about, it can be a really fun way to kick off the experience.

One Thing to Remember Before Setting Your Bridesmaid Proposal Budget

Before deciding what you want to spend, it’s worth thinking about what your girls may be committing to when they say yes.

Being a bridesmaid is an honor, but it can also be a pretty significant financial commitment.

Depending on your wedding plans, your bridesmaids may be paying for:

  • A $100+ bridesmaid dress
  • Alterations
  • Shoes and accessories
  • Hair and makeup
  • Nails
  • Travel to your wedding
  • Hotel accommodations
  • Vacation days away from work
  • Travel and accommodations for a bachelorette party
  • Bachelorette activities, meals, and outfits
  • A bridal shower gift
  • A lingerie shower gift
  • A wedding gift

Not every bridesmaid will have every one of these expenses, of course. But once everything is added together, saying yes to being in someone’s wedding can mean committing hundreds of dollars and quite a bit of time.

That doesn’t mean you owe your bridesmaids an expensive proposal gift. You absolutely don’t.

But if you have room in your wedding budget, investing a little more into your bridesmaid gifts can be a really thoughtful way to acknowledge how much your friends are investing in you.

And that appreciation doesn’t have to stop with the proposal.

Covering their wedding day jewelry, paying for their hair or makeup, providing accommodations, gifting pajamas they’ll actually wear again, keeping the bachelorette trip affordable, or simply being mindful of how many expenses you’re asking them to take on can mean just as much.

The Best Bridesmaid Proposal Is the One That Feels Like Your Friendship

Your best friend probably isn’t going to remember whether her bridesmaid proposal cost $15 or $150.

She will remember sitting across from you while you told her why you wanted her beside you.

So personalize it.

Write the letter. Include the ridiculous picture from college. Buy her favorite candy instead of the trendy one that matches your wedding colors. FaceTime her if she’s across the country. Take your sister to the coffee shop you’ve been going to together for years.

Spend what makes sense for your budget, but put your energy into making the ask meaningful.

Because ultimately, you’re not really asking her to accept a cute box of gifts.

You’re asking her to walk through one of the biggest seasons of your life beside you—and that’s the part worth celebrating.
