There are some sessions that feel like a full-circle moment, and this UT Gardens Senior Session for Maddie Chandler was exactly that for me. I go way back with this family. Back to my high school days at a church my dad attended. At that time, I don’t even think Maddie had been born yet. I first met her parents, Kat and Jay, and instantly adored them. Even as life moved on, I always stayed connected with Kat. Partly because I genuinely loved her, and partly because she is hands down the best hairstylist I know.
During my college years, I would get my hair done in my tiny college town only to plan a trip back to Knoxville shortly after so Kat could fix it because truly, no one did it like she did. Fast forward to moving back to Knoxville, I got to see her more regularly again. Catching up on life and hearing all about her girls, Maddie and Kylie, at every appointment.
So, stepping into this UT Gardens senior session with Maddie felt extra special. Even though she didn’t remember me (which, let’s be honest, made me feel just a little old), getting to photograph her at this milestone moment in her life was such an honor.
What stood out most about Maddie wasn’t just how beautiful she is—though she absolutely is—but her confidence in exactly who God made her to be. She is unapologetically herself, and there is something so refreshing and inspiring about that. Throughout the session, there were so many little in-between moments where she would naturally fall into a pose or expression that was so uniquely her that I would stop and ask her to do it again. These “Maddie-isms” were the sweetest little glimpses into her personality.
Her dancer hands carried this gentle elegance, and her big, genuine smile brought so much joy to every frame. This UT Gardens senior session felt light, meaningful, and full of personality just like Maddie herself.
I truly cannot wait to see where her journey takes her next. One thing I know for sure is that wherever she goes, the world is going to get more of those Maddie-isms, and that is something we all need more of.
