Like most wedding photographers, I have slowly taken fewer family sessions as my wedding schedule increased over the years. This is mostly because I know I can’t serve my clients well when I have too much on my plate. After doing this for nearly 12 years, most of my portrait time is all snatched up by AMP alumni. They always get first dibs on the time I have available. Every now and then, however, I get a new family that doesn’t care to book a few months in advance. I love bringing new families in even though it doesn’t happen super often anymore. The Williams family is one of those families for 2022, and I’m so excited to share more from their session with you.
Family sessions including little kids are very unpredictable. There are so many different temperaments out there, and when there are children younger than 8 years old involved, you really have to walk in with an open mind. If your expectation is to get all posed and smiling photos, it’s going to feel like a very stressful and chaotic 30 minutes. But if your expectation is to meet them right where they are, that same exact 30 minutes can be fun, energizing, and exciting.
Bennett and Isla were definitely the types of kids that wanted to run around and have fun. Jumping off rocks, climbing on rails, throwing leaves in the air, having races, being tickled. This was their jam. I got ALL the smiles when we were doing the fun things like this. You know what?? I loved it just as much as I would have loved a family with all grown children looking at the camera. That is the beauty of family sessions. They are not a one size fits all, cookie cutter deal. They are fluid and flexible, bending to the season of life that your family is currently in. Reflecting the little personalities blossoming at that time. I don’t take tons of family sessions like I used to, which means I love the ones I do get to take even more now!
