I’ve shot one other Vietnamese-American wedding, but it did not dive nearly as far into the Vietnamese traditions as Loanie and Andy’s day did. On the morning of this Vietnamese wedding, the families of the bride and groom, the bridal party, and the couple gathered at the bride’s parents’ house. They hosted what is known as a tea ceremony. The basic preface is where the groom’s family presents gifts to the bride’s family and the bride’s family accepts them into their home. They present the bride, and both sets of parents decorate the bride and groom with jewelry, pray over them, present words of wisdom to them, and light a unity candle for them. They present tiny little cups of tea to their family members in exchange for words of wisdom and encouragement. They exchange rings and host a meal afterward. The whole thing was done in their native language so I didn’t understand any of it, but I could see the emotion on their faces and the body language and knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this was such a sweet moment for both of their families.
Their cultural traditions extended further than just the tea ceremony though. They also performed a receiving line to welcome each and every guest into the reception. Then, they walked around and visited each and every table to spend some quality time with each of their guests. It was such an emotional day, but not in the crying sense. More in the tons and tons of smiling sense. I swear everyone was smiling all day. There are TONS of candids in Loanie and Andy’s gallery because everyone was smiling all the time.
I am so thankful Andy and Loanie invited me to be a part of their Vietnamese wedding day. It was beautiful to see how their culture performs the ceremony and how they integrated the two together. The whole day was just stunning, and as always, the sunset at Hunter Valley did not disappoint. I’m excited to share their highlights with you!
