There are a few areas around Knoxville that really thrive in the spring and UT Gardens is one of them. I met Melissa Black on The University of Tennessee’s campus to do a UT Gardens Senior session with her. She is graduating with her Bachelor’s in nursing from Tennessee Wesleyan University and will be working at Fort Sanders. She’s going to continue on to do more graduate work and further her degree, but in the mean time will be working third shift doing what she’s worked SO hard to do. When she hired me for her UT Gardens Senior session, we just spoke via email. It’s super hard to tell a person’s personality over email so I really had no idea that she and I would get along SO great when we finally met up! We both shared the smiley, bubbly, enthusiastic characteristic, and I knew instantly that she was going to make an amazing nurse. Unless you’ve had to spend nights in the hospital relying heavily on a nursing staff, there is no real way for you to understand what an important role nurses play. WAY more important than the doctor. 13.5 months ago, I had baby G at St. Mary’s (or Physicians Regional Medical Center… why the heck did they rename it SUCH a long name???), and I had a range of 4 or 5 different nurses. I had the very seasoned one who had been doing this for ages. I had the newby that just started on night shift. I had the grumpy one who man handled my first baby. And I had the one that was just the right amount of kindness and firmness, humor and seriousness, motivating and understanding… she and I will forever have a bond that I’m not sure she is even aware of. Her name was Lindsay and she completely changed my whole experience. That is the kind of impact nurses can have. And this girl right here… she was cut out for it. She will make an experience for someone that isn’t so great a lot better just by being her happy, bubbly self. I am so so glad that she decided to have a UT Gardens Senior session with me… I think we both had a blast documenting this monumental moment in her life!
