I traveled to Nashville for Mariah and Slade’s Percy Warner engagement session the day before I shot a wedding in Louisville, KY. My second shooter for my Louisville wedding came with me from Knoxville. Instead of driving to Nashville and back, then to Louisville and back, we just made a girls’ trip out of it, and she came to Nashville with me so we could go from there to Louisville. Occasionally, this same second shooter will associate shoot weddings for me, and ALWAYS kills it! But this particular situation presented a unique opportunity for us. She sat in on one of my engagement sessions (since she had to be there anyway) to observe how I run those in comparison to how I run my weddings, which she sees all the time. She was so encouraging during their session saying things like, “Oh my gosh, YES! This is GORGEOUS,” and, “You guys look SO good.” I couldn’t help but think how much of a confidence booster it had to be for the couple to hear positive feedback coming from someone other than me. I regularly (and maybe too often) say things like this from behind my camera as I’m shooting my clients. Just to give them reassurance that they are doing exactly what I want them to do. Silence causes couples to question if they are “doing it right” so I definitely avoid silence. In all of my coaching and cheering, I will occasionally get responses like, “Oh please, you say that to everyone.” I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to tell you that I’m not just saying it to say it. I am not the type of person who says things just to fill the silence. When I say something, I do it with purpose, and I mean it. I try to pick out something unique to the particular bride and groom that I’m working with so it doesn’t seem like I’m just repeating the same compliment at all my sessions. I think we are always able to keep learning in our trade and it was at this Percy Warner engagement session in this unique situation of another professional photographer being there, that I learned how important it is to communicate to my clients that it is not just words behind my camera. It is truly how I feel as I’m documenting this sweet sweet stage of life for you, and I want you to know that it is all sincere!
