Lexington Courthouse Wedding

Exactly four days after Christmas, Dustin and I headed back to Somerset, KY where his family lives. A really close family friend of the Fothergill’s was having a Lexington courthouse wedding, and they wanted me to photograph it. It always means a lot when family friends choose me as their photographer. They know that the stakes are higher when you hire a family friend than when you hire a complete stranger. With a stranger, if you don’t like something they do, you tell them. Then, you move on because you’re probably never seeing or talking to them again. If you hire someone you’re friends with, however, it’s hard to know the right way to approach telling them about something you don’t like because you don’t want to make the relationship weird. You can’t take back words you’ve already said so approaching the situation delicately is a must. Despite all of that, Morgan and Jean chose me to be their photographer, and I’m so glad they did.

We started the day at the cutest little hotel in downtown Lexington, which is where Morgan got dressed and where we did her and Jean’s first look. Then, we headed out to walk around the city taking portraits before we met the rest of their family and friends for their Lexington courthouse wedding. There is something really cool about Morgan and Jean that you won’t know just by looking at these pictures. Morgan is from Kentucky. Jean is from a town in France. When they met, they were in a third country, and they didn’t speak each other’s language. Somehow, they still figured out how to communicate, and ultimately, spent the next year learning each other’s language while getting to know each other across the ocean.

I think Morgan may know this about me, Jean may not, but I love France. I’m obsessed with the French language, and Paris is my FAVORITE city in the entire world. I don’t speak French fluently, but it was my foreign language of choice in high school. Bits of the very basics have stuck with me since then. In 2014, for our one year anniversary, Dustin and I took a trip to Paris, Rome, and Brussels. We immersed ourselves into each of the cultures, and the French culture is what I connected with most. I loved every single thing about the city of Paris. Everyone bikes everywhere, they have the most delicious pastries on the planet, their baguette sandwiches, and the number of immaculate gardens they have scattered throughout the city. The art was everything I ever dreamed it would be. The age of the city was beautiful. I just loved it. I’ve never met a French person on this side of the pond, so it was an utter pleasure getting to chat with Jean and his parents. Every now and then I would throw some french words out there, and it took me back to our time in Paris. It was seriously so much fun.

I’m so excited to be sharing their Lexington courthouse wedding with you today. I hope you can appreciate the two cultures becoming one and celebrating with all their friends and family afterwards at a fabulous restaurant called Carson’s!
