I’ve photographed the Wertz family several times now, and I love every session more and more. This time, we met at their lake house, and we seriously had the BEST lighting. Beau, their little boy, is now 2 years old and is an absolute doll. It’s always hard this time of year at that age though because as the sun is getting lower in the sky, the lighting is just beautiful. However, the sun sets so late in the summer and prioritizing our timing to have gorgeous light also means shooting after Beau’s bedtime. And like any 2 year old, Beau was suspicious of my big camera. It’s totally normal at this age that they find it strange that I keep putting my camera up to my face and holding it there while I talk to them and try to make them smile. And while this suspicion was there, it was heightened by also being late. The first few minutes, I had a really stoic version of Beau. But as a mom, I also love the stoic shots so I appreciated this time. As we kept shooting at their lake house property, Beau was getting less intrigued. Instead of forcing it or trying to make something happen that wasn’t possible, we hopped in their side by side and drove down to the dock. This was Beau’s happy place. He was smiling and cracking up and having so much fun. This was his smiling, happy mood. After we finished there, we headed back to the house, changed clothes, and I was hopeful to take a few with the sun hovering RIGHT over the horizon, but Beau had decided he was done. Which is totally fine. We got a couple more snippets out of him, but he was mostly done. When toddlers decide they’re done, it can sometimes overshadow all the good smiles and stoic model faces we got earlier. It’s easy as a parent to feel like the session was a bust. Trust me, I’ve been there. But I kept reassuring Alina and Zach that I totally got more than what it feels like. And as I began culling their lake house session, I truly did get more than what it felt like. There are so many beautiful images here, and I cannot wait to share them!
