My middle wedding this past weekend was in Dayton, OH. How in the world did I get a Dayton, OH wedding you ask? It starts back in college. Even before I started Amanda May Photos. I went to undergrad at University of the Cumberlands where I played volleyball. This is where I met Megan. Our coach was from Ohio and recruited a lot of my teammates from Ohio. Megan being one of them. My senior year when I started Amanda May Photos, Megan was one of my most amazing encouragers. She let me take pictures of her to practice my skill, told everyone about me, interacted with every single social media post I ever put out there, and was just a major advocate. I don’t know if she realizes it or not, but she impacted me so much in the beginning of becoming a professional photographer.
Over the years, Megan attended a TON of weddings I photographed of mutual friends we had in college. Every time I saw her, she would gush about how much she loved watching me grow as a photographer. Then one day, I got the message from her. The message that would ultimately bring me to Dayton, OH on May 18, 2019. Megan was engaged. She had met the man of her dreams, Davis Michalewicz, and they were officially getting married. Davis is in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Louisiana. They did long distance for a while before Megan made the move from Dayton to Shreveport. Not two weeks after they moved in to their house, I was their very first house guest. They brought me to Louisiana to photograph their engagement photos, and my, oh my, how much I loved shooting in Louisiana. I met Davis, and his genuine kindness and ability to make a perfect stranger feel like they’ve known him forever really impressed me. You can read more about my fun time in Louisiana on their engagement session blog post because now I want to talk about their wedding day!
I’m super thankful to Megan and Davis for working with me and my crazy weekend schedule. They knew I would be waking up early to drive to Dayton on the morning of their wedding and were able to work with me enough to let me get there at 10am and not any earlier! Megan and Davis know how to have fun. They enjoy a good beer, love a live dance floor, and can appreciate a pretty image. So, fun people surrounding them to have a drink with, dance with, and (probably more for Megan than Davis) have really pretty photos with was so important on their wedding day. That means that in our commute from the hotel to Top of the Market, we all hopped on a party bus to take us from the hotel to two fabulous photo locations before we landed at the venue. Later, they let me sneak them back outside for some really epic sunset photos, which are some of my favorites from the day.
There are a lot of photographers in Megan’s life. She has a cousin who knows her way around a camera, and she also has a family friend that is a very good, experienced photographer she grew up modeling for. So, for her to choose me to be the one to capture her day literally means the world to me. I can’t tell you how incredible it was to watch such a dear friend tie the knot with such an awesome man. This is just the beginning for them, and I can’t wait to see the journey their lives take over the years.
I want to say a big, massive thank you to Davis and Megan for having me as part of their day. For letting me hop on the dance floor a couple times, join in their party bus fun, take them back out for amazing sunset photos, eat their delicious reception food at a table with Dustin, have me in their home in Louisiana, and trust me with such an important day. You guys are so amazing, and I’m honored to call you friends!
P.S. Thank you, Davis, for serving and protecting our country. You are so brave.
