Tiffany, Shawn, and I all went to University of the Cumberlands. Shawn is actually from the area, but now, he and Tiffany live in Lexington, Kentucky. They booked me as their wedding photographer several months ago, and when we discussed locations, it made so much sense for us to meet in the middle for a Cumberland engagement session. I say that because we went to both Cumberland Falls and University of the Cumberlands. Cumberland Falls is hands down one of my favorite spots to shoot. I think I love it so much because it’s not accessible enough that everyone wants to go there, which means I don’t shoot there very often, and it offers SUCH a unique look that you don’t find in this area. During Tiffany and Shawn’s Cumberland engagement session, my favorite spot ended up being an area at the falls that had so much driftwood stacked on top of each other we couldn’t even see the sandy ground. Shawn is super tall so there weren’t a ton of opportunities for me to shoot down on him, but in this spot, I was able to climb on top of this HUGE boulder and shoot almost straight down on them. There’s just a ton of driftwood behind them, and I am obsessed. Some of my favorite images that I’ve ever taken come from shooting a Cumberland engagement session! I just love them! The waterfall at Cumberland Falls is great, but honestly, it’s terribly hard to work into photographs. So, when this couple told me that they were totally okay with not having the falls in the background, it made my day. There’s just not a good angle to get it behind the subject and not overexposed to the point you can’t even tell it’s a waterfall. Unless you want to be standing so close to it that you’re getting sprayed with a gallon of water on your perfectly curled hair, cute outfit, and professional makeup. Ha. Yeah, no. So, we don’t go for the falls, we go for the rest of it, and sheesh do I love it.
