Amy and Fun chose their engagement session location when we scheduled it back in the fall. They specifically chose Foothills Parkway for its Smoky Mountain view. As their session approached, there was also a snow storm brewing, and the temps in East Tennessee were frigid. A few days before their session, I had another engagement session that was in the 40s, and we were so cold we didn’t even make it the full hour. Going into Amy and Fun’s session, I warned them I’d work as fast as possible, but with a high of 34, we may not make it the full hour. The difference between these two sessions however, was the sun and the wind. At the 40 degree session, it was super windy, and there was little to no sun out. At the 34 degree session, the sun was blazing, and there was little to no wind. What a massive difference this made. We did actually last the whole hour! Since the Parkway was closed due to ice though, we pivoted and used one of my dear friend’s backyard. So thankful they let us borrow their Smoky Mountain view for an hour. Everything else I knew with a view was not accessible because of ice covered roads.
Something I think you’ll notice about this session is my use of more direct sunlight than normal. Lots of reasons for this. Mostly because the feels like temp in the sun was much warmer than in the shade. But also because for the best view of the mountains, we had to be positioned with the sun hitting the front of them. So instead of avoiding the beautiful Smoky Mountain view, I embraced the front lighting, and I’m not going to lie, I kind of love it! Although, I still got my classic backlighting and some fully shaded. I love how we got a variety of lighting situations and some epic mountain view photos!
