Wedding Planning 101: Uneven Wedding Parties

They Really Aren’t That Bad

Let me put your mind at ease. Having an odd number of wedding party members does not ruin your photos. It does not look weird or feel awkward. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it a million times again – more important than anything else in choosing your wedding party members is surrounding yourself with the people who love you most. So, if that means you have an odd number or more bridesmaids than groomsmen, it is a-okay.

If you’re afraid having an odd number might look weird, however, here are a couple tips to make it less noticeable in your photos:

  1. Like the photo above, if the bride or groom angle into the maid of honor or best man, now there are 4 people on either side and the line up is symmetrical. Instead of having the bride and groom be the center point facing the camera, the center point is the V formed between the bride and MOH.
  2. In the big group photos of your entire wedding party together, if you alternate bridesmaid-groomsman-bridesmaid-groomsman and split them up on either side of you and your hubs, it’s way less noticeable if there’s an odd number.
  3. If you arrange everyone in something other than a straight line, it’s also way less noticeable. Example poses include walking, bunched together in a layered kind of circle (some squatted down in front with taller people in the back looking through windows with a middle row at the same level as the bride or groom), or spaced out with different depths.

Keep scrolling for some examples of these different options. Remember, don’t just add people to make your numbers even. It isn’t about having symmetry on your wedding day. It’s about having the people that mean the most to you up there standing beside you. Trust me when I tell you if you ask someone you don’t really want just to have a body, you’ll regret it. If you don’t ask someone that you really want just to have a lower number, you’ll regret it. You do you, and make sure you have your people with you while you do it.
