Prior to July 2021, I had never photographed a Vietnamese tea ceremony. I really had never even heard of it or knew it was a tradition in the Vietnamese culture. Then, Loanie and Andy hired me to photograph their Vietnamese tea ceremony followed by their wedding. Leading up to their celebration, they sent me several articles on what a tea ceremony is and the meaning behind each part of the ceremony. Once I arrived, they also had an extended family member help translate for me as well as give me a play by play on what was happening next so I could get into the right position to photograph the upcoming part. When it was all said and done, it was such an honor to get to be a part of another culture’s traditions. To experience how others celebrate marriage and begin their wedding day. I blogged that tea ceremony, and since then, I have been hired to photograph two more! Since Amy and Antonio’s tea ceremony happened on January 2nd, I was still on maternity leave so my associate shooter, Miranda Lawson, actually shot it for me. I was sad to not be able to be there myself, but it was also fun to explain everything to Miranda and let her get to be a part of a Vietnamese tea ceremony herself. It was so beautiful and so emotional, and even though in the Vietnamese culture they are technically married now, we are going to get to celebrate the two of them on November 5, 2022, with a traditional celebration as we know it here in our culture. So fun to get to have two separate celebrations and not because of COVID!
