Destination Wedding in the Redwood National Park

Oh, guys, I am so excited to be sharing this rainy Redwood National Park wedding with you!

Abby, who lives in Cleveland, Tennessee, and is a photographer herself, originally reached out to me about photographing her wedding on the first weekend of April. When I realized it fell on Easter weekend, it pained me to tell her I couldn’t make it work. Our family holds that day close, and with little ones still fully in their Easter egg hunting era, I knew I needed to be home. But in a turn that felt meant to be, Abby later decided to move their wedding to the following weekend on her late father’s birthday.

And that decision shaped the entire heart of their day.

Abby’s dad always dreamed of visiting the Redwoods. In honor of him, they chose to say their vows surrounded by the towering trees of Redwood National Park. It was quiet, emotional, and incredibly meaningful. Abby carried her dad with her in the most beautiful ways. A necklace with his handwriting that read “I love you” and a small charm on her bouquet with his photo. Having lost my own dad, I felt the weight of those details deeply. It’s an honor I don’t take lightly to walk alongside couples navigating a wedding day without a parent. Preserving both the joy and the ache that coexist in those moments.

And then, the rain came.

It didn’t just sprinkle, it poured. The entire ceremony, every portrait, all of it unfolded under steady rain. But somehow, it only added to the magic. The fog hung low between the trees, the colors deepened, and Abby and Nick embraced every second of it. There was no stress and no rushing. Just a quiet kind of joy and presence that made everything feel sacred.

Dustin and I made the trip out to California on our own. Four days packed with travel, late nights, and long drives from San Francisco to Mendocino, up to Klamath, and back again. It was exhausting and so life-giving all at once. Time like that together, especially in this season of raising three kids, is rare, and I’m so grateful to my mother-in-law and father-in-law for making it possible.

Dustin stepped in as my assistant for the day. He held umbrellas over me and my camera, managed the bridal bouquet, helped Abby navigate the forest (and even climb down from a massive fallen redwood). He absolutely showed up in every way, and also made it very clear this was a one-time gig for a once-in-a-lifetime kind of wedding.

Because Abby and Nick’s wedding wasn’t just beautiful. It was meaningful, resilient, and completely unforgettable. Rain and all, it was perfect.
