Meads Quarry Family Session
Family sessions before kids are a lot like engagement sessions. Engagement sessions are always some of my favorite sessions because I get so much time with the couple. They are dressed in outfits that they love and give them confidence. We choose a location that they love. I get to take them in the prettiest lighting of the day. For all of those reasons, I just love engagement sessions. Even though this is technically a Meads Quarry family session, it has the same feel as an engagement session. It’s better though because these two have the comfort of a marriage together. When I asked them to hold hands or kiss or for Matt to sweep Emily up in his arms, they did so with familiarity, and instantly, it becomes that much more romantic and dreamy and natural. I just love this Meads Quarry family session.
Bringing it personal
The first time that I ever shot at Meads Quarry was a few years ago when a couple from Chattanooga came to Knoxville for me to take their engagement photos. They asked me if I had ever shot there, and of course, I said no. Luckily, I love shooting in new places, so I started doing my research on engagement sessions at Meads Quarry. I actually went there a couple days in advance to scope it out. I knew there was a spot where you could get the rock in the background as well as it’s reflection in the water, but I had no idea where that spot was. If you’ve ever been to Meads Quarry, it’s part of the Ijams Nature Center, and there are trails running all over the property. Obviously, this spot had to be off the trail that circles around the quarry, and I thought I had found it. I brought the couple to where I thought this spot was. It turns out there was not NEARLY enough room for us to shoot there. It was a little side trail that went STRAIGHT down, and there was one tiny flat spot at the bottom where you would balance on tree roots and hold on to the trunk to not fall in the water. There was barely enough room for two people, let alone three. I took about five pictures, pretended like it was totally worth the hike down, and got the heck out of there. After all of that, I couldn’t deliver any photos from that spot because it was just not the pretty spot I was thinking it was going to be. I learned a lot about Meads Quarry that day, and I’ve been taking couples there ever since. I did find the spot with the reflection after I hiked much further back into the woods so I’m not making my clients get anywhere close to falling in the water anymore ;-).
