This family is incredible. I met them down at Adair Park at 8 am for a mini family session last week. As I started culling the photos, I realized something. I have started taking pictures of children totally different than what I used to. It’s funny how situations and circumstances change the way we do something. With artists, our every day experiences in life greatly influence the way that we create our art… and in this case, photograph my clients. Every wedding that I’ve photographed since my dad died I’ve noticed that I’ve spent more time making sure I get every hug that the bride gives to her family, every laugh that she shares with her friends, because I know how much those photos mean to me now that I don’t have him here. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I photographed these moments before – but now there is so much more weight behind every click. I am so much more intentional about getting the tear, the tight squeeze and the belly laugh.
Well the same is true for how I photograph kids now that Grayson is here. I always thought parents just wanted the cute smiley shots. They didn’t want the in-between funny faces, snotty noses, or tantrums. But I’ve come to realize that those are some of my FAVORITE Grayson photos. So normally when I would weed out all of those moments in between, now I include them in their gallery. The cover photo I’m using for this post is one of those moments and it’s definitely one of my favorites from Lilly’s session! Kids are so unpredictable and now when I’m taking photos of them, I rarely ever put my camera down from my face. Because even when we are walking from one spot to the next, she may start playing peek-a-boo and throw her hands over her eyes and I would be so mad if I missed that moment. The random things they do are pieces of the little person they are in this season and with children, the seasons end as quick as they begin. Right now Grayson is doing this thing where he sucks on his bottom lip and it makes his chin look so tiny. It is both hilarious and amazingly cute. I’ve taken a dozen photos of him doing it because one day he’ll stop and I’ll forget that it was ever a thing. Until I look back on my pictures.
So to all the families out there hiring me for their photos… you might notice there’s a few more shots included in your gallery because now you’ll get the smile, but you’ll also get the fingers-in-the-mouth, pulling-out-the-bow, scratching-the-butt pictures too! And don’t be surprised if one of those other ones end up becoming your favorite!
